eggshells

Are eggshells allowed in the organic waste bin?

Yes, eggshells can be disposed of in the organic waste bin without any problems. This is because eggshells are a purely natural material and are 100% biodegradable. They consist mainly of calcium carbonate and are therefore an organic material that is ideal for composting. By breaking down eggshells in the organic waste bin, important nutrients are returned to the natural cycle.

eggshells organic waste

Compost made from eggshells has a high calcium content, which particularly benefits calcium-loving plants such as tomatoes. Another advantage of eggshells is that they increase the pH value of the compost and thus counteract acidification. In some composts, acidification occurs during the decomposition process, eggshells are ideal for balancing this out. They act as a natural pH regulator, so to speak.

In addition to organic waste, eggshells are also ideal for mulching and can be scattered directly around plants. Here they gradually release calcium into the soil.

There are actually no reasons why eggshells should not be disposed of in organic waste. Only heavily soiled eggshells or eggshells coloured with non-food-safe dyes should be avoided, as possible colour pigments or harmful substances could end up in the compost.

As a small precautionary measure, it is advisable to lightly crush the eggshells before disposing of them. This speeds up the decomposition process and prevents unrotted shells from remaining in the compost.

Salmonella risk associated with compost disposal

Salmonella is a constant companion of raw poultry eggs, so you should always pay attention to hygiene when handling eggs. Salmonella is a living bacteria that multiplies rapidly, especially in warm conditions. If the eggshells end up in your home compost, they find the ideal conditions there and can spread and multiply.

However, the situation is different when disposing of organic waste. The heat used to compost organic waste is usually so hot that any salmonella potentially present is destroyed. Bacteria therefore have no chance and the compost can be reused without hesitation.

Coloured eggshells in the organic waste or in the residual waste?

For many people, the question arises around Easter in particular: what to do with the coloured eggshells? According to the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), there is nothing to stop eggshells that have been treated with colours from being disposed of in organic waste. The reason for this is that, as a rule, Easter eggs may only be coloured with food or organic dyes that are harmless to health.

Organic waste - Eggshells are allowed

In some municipalities, it is recommended that eggshells are not placed loose in the organic waste bin, but wrapped in a paper bag or compostable organic waste bags. This is to prevent odours and the attraction of vermin.

Due to their natural composition and high calcium content, eggshells are an absolute benefit for organic waste. Alternatively, small quantities of eggshells can also be used directly as fertiliser in the garden. Simply work them into plant pots or spread them around shrubs and flower beds.
