Can you put meat in the organic waste bin?

Yes, meat scraps can be disposed of in the organic waste bin in normal household quantities. Meat is considered organic waste and can therefore be disposed of in the organic waste together with other biodegradable materials. Whether raw meat, meat scraps or bones, they can all be placed in the organic waste bin to decompose in the composting process.

When disposing of meat scraps in the organic waste bin, however, you should bear a few important points in mind. Firstly, it is advisable to wrap meat scraps well to prevent odors and to avoid attracting flies, which like to lay their eggs in waste. Maggot infestation in the organic waste bin can be unpleasant. Paper bags or newspaper, for example, are suitable for this purpose and can be placed in the organic waste bin together with the meat scraps.

Meat scraps, bones and raw meat in the organic waste bin

The situation is different for bones. In principle, these can also be put in the organic waste bin, but bones take longer to decompose than other meat scraps and can slow down the composting process. It is therefore advisable to chop up large meat bones before disposing of them in order to speed up the decomposition process.

Special care should be taken with raw meat. It develops an unpleasant rotting smell relatively quickly, which attracts flies and encourages maggot infestation. Raw meat should therefore only be disposed of in organic waste in exceptional cases and in small quantities. It is best to wrap raw meat in newspaper to soak up the moisture and minimize odours.

Cooked meat scraps can of course also be disposed of in organic waste as long as they are not heavily seasoned or sauced. Overly seasoned or heavily salted meat can impair the composting process and should therefore be avoided. It is advisable to allow cooked meat scraps to cool briefly before disposing of them in order to minimize odours.

Another important aspect is to avoid plastic packaging or other non-compostable materials. These must be removed before disposal and disposed of separately in the residual waste. Plastic packaging can impair the composting process and should therefore not be placed in the organic waste bin.

Meat - Organic waste or residual waste

Meat scraps can generally be put in the organic waste bin without hesitation as long as a few basic rules are followed. By disposing of meat scraps together with other organic waste in the organic waste bin, they can contribute to the production of high-quality compost and help to reduce waste.

Please note: In some districts, the disposal of raw meat and bones in the organic waste bin is not permitted for epidemiological reasons. There, the food waste must be disposed of in the residual waste. You should therefore contact your local waste management association in advance to find out about proper disposal.

If there is any doubt as to whether meat belongs in the organic waste bin or not, it is advisable to dispose of it in the residual waste to be on the safe side.
