The ToniToi team: Anna and Paul
Anna & Paul von Toni TT

Hello Anna and Paul. Introduce yourselves briefly, who are you?

We are Anna & Paul, two enthusiastic campers and nature lovers from Munich. Together with our brother-in-law Markus, we founded the family business With Nature in 2021 and developed the Toni TT sustainable separation toilets conversion kit.

You are campers from the bottom of your hearts, how did you discover this passion for yourselves?

We have always enjoyed spending a lot of time in nature, where we can relax and recharge our batteries. I, Anna, discovered my passion for camping as a child, as I often went on camping holidays with my parents. These holidays are some of my fondest childhood memories. I knew that I wanted to experience something similar with Paul.

In 2018, Paul and I went on our first camping holiday in Canada. We rented a campervan and travelled through British Columbia and Alberta for three weeks. This experience left such a lasting impression on us that we wanted to have our own van afterwards. We then fulfilled our dream in 2020 with our Toni panel van.

What we love most about camping is the freedom, the closeness to nature and the fact that we can combine it with our hobbies such as hiking, nature photography, mushroom picking and fishing. We also don’t like flying and it’s a more relaxed and sustainable way of travelling for us. Today, we mainly travel in Europe (especially Scandinavia and Sardinia).

With Toni TT, you are focussing on innovative and sustainable urine-diverting toilet solutions in the camping sector. How did you get started? How did it all start?

It all started in 2020 with our Toni camper van. As we don’t like traditional campsites, like to be free-standing and also attach great importance to sustainability, it was clear to us from the outset that we wanted to switch from the standard chemical toilet to a sustainable separating toilet. There were already some good solutions on the market, but none of them convinced us. We would have had to remove the original toilet and virtually ‘destroy’ the bathroom. That wasn’t an option for us. We also really wanted to continue disposing of faeces from the outside through the service hatch and not through our ‘living room’. Paul likes to tinker and is quite talented with his hands. He then said: ‘You know what, I’ve got an idea, I’ll just do it myself!’. I said: ‘You’re crazy.’ But now here we are, running a business together… ☺

How do you implement sustainability at Toni TT?

Sustainability plays a central role in our entire value chain. From the selection of production partners to sustainable packaging, we try to minimise the negative impact on the environment as much as possible.

With Toni TT, you don’t have to buy a completely new toilet, but can easily convert the existing system into a sustainable separating toilet and also retrofit it again if necessary. We also manufacture entirely in Germany and minimise our CO2 footprint through short transport routes. We ship plastic-free and climate-neutral.

We have been a supporting member of the WOHNmobil für Klimaschutz e.V. association since 2023, are committed to environmentally friendly and ecological camping and donate a tree for every Toni TT sold. We are proud of this. We want our company to stand for something and really make a positive contribution.

Sustainability when camping. Where do you currently see the biggest challenges, or if you could change three things, what would they be?

First of all, a holiday in a campervan is much more sustainable than flying. There are places in Austria, Slovenia or Switzerland where you feel like you’re in Canada. In Sardinia there are beaches that surpass even the Caribbean or Thailand. One problem is certainly that camping has boomed in the last 3 years, fuelled by Corona. Many new and often inexperienced campers want to live the #vanlife lifestyle propagated on Instagram without taking responsibility. They show little to no consideration for nature and leave pitches littered with rubbish or excrement. That is very annoying. We think there should be more education on the subject of sustainable camping and also higher penalties for littering pitches. More official disposal stations for rubbish and toilets would also be helpful. In many countries, there is a complete lack of these, which of course fuels the aforementioned behaviour.

The biggest issue for us, however, are the chemical toilets that are installed as standard in almost all campervans and panel vans, which are used with environmentally harmful additives. We also take a critical view of so-called heat-seal toilets, where every single flush is sealed in a plastic bag. Apart from the fact that environmentally harmful plastic is used, they can turn into small bombs that explode in the rubbish, especially in southern countries in hot weather. This is why some campsites are already banning the disposal of such faeces bags. Separating toilets are currently still a niche product, many people are afraid to use them and think they are unhygienic, which they are not. There should be more information about this sustainable and very clean alternative.

In your opinion, what is the biggest lever for turning camping into green camping?

Information on the topic of ‘How green camping works’. Education on the topic of separate toilets and correct disposal. A good infrastructure for the disposal of waste and faeces so that environmental pollution no longer has to be an alternative.

Camping newbies and interested parties: which profiles/sites should you definitely follow?

We really like using the Park4Night app. Here you can find great pitches far away from traditional campsites, where you can stay close to nature, undisturbed and often even for free.

We can also recommend the Instagram profile @linas_reisen with the associated blog linasreisen.com. Here you can find great travel inspiration paired with beautiful photos.

No desire or time to plan your own route? Then take a look at advantours.de. Here you can download pre-made itineraries tried and tested by campers for little money.

We are also big fans of the German, sustainable camping accessories brand Valleys & Hills, which makes beautiful bedspreads, travel towels and shower ponchos from natural materials. We ourselves share impressions of our travels and experiences in nature on our private Instagram account @outsideis_free. If you like, you can also follow us here.

In your opinion, what should not be missing on a perfect camping trip?

Cold beer in the fridge, firewood for a cosy campfire, a Toni TT on board and, of course, sustainable bin liners from BIOvative that can be used for both the Toni TT and other camper waste. ☺

Do you have any final thoughts you'd like to share?

We are very grateful to be working with an innovative, sustainable brand like BIOvative. Thank you for the interview and we look forward to everything that is yet to come!

We can only give that back! Thank you so much for your time 🙂
